Late Dr. Sindhu Joshi (1932-2015)

Dr. Sindhu Joshi, again a leading scientist from Bio-physics Division of the Cancer Research Institute, contributed immensely to the formation of IWSA. She was President, IWSA from 1987-1989

Dr. Sindhu Joshi worked in the Biophysics division of Cancer Research Institute. She had many scientific papers on her research work, to her credit. She was very much interested in promoting scientific culture. She was also associated with Marathi Vidyan Parishad and other NGO’s.

She was the first President of the Third World Organisation for Women Scientists’- TWAS (what is now OWSD-Organisation of Women Scientists for the Developing World) for two terms and in this capacity, she contributed in including many women scientists and engineers in TWOWS from African and other Asian countries.  She was also associated with Marathi Vidyan Parishad and other NGOs. Active in many of its activities, she had a critical outlook and was an excellent sounding board and kept the members alert with her sharp questions and an inquiring mind. She surprised many of her colleagues, when in her seventies she accepted the convenorship of a national IWSA conference in Mumbai, and conducted it well.
